Treetrunk

Treetrunk Records, hailing from MidWestern USA, accepts quality musical submissions from artists from all over the globe. Our original mission was to showcase ambient and particularly experimental ambient (such as fractal / generative) music. For some time we also expanded into the field of phonography or field recordings, for both raw recordings and manipulated recorded material. Finally we have opened the doors a bit to other genres, accepting various quality submissions, though we still prefer for them to be experimental in nature, at least to a degree. We are a NetLabel with a heart. That does not mean that we accept everything sent our way. Rather, we strive to treat the creators of good music (and their fans) with compassion, releasing our material in a coherent and organized fashion, and, of course, generally-- charging no money for our releases. We invite interested parties to visit us at our homepage: ( Treetrunk Home Page ).

Much of this media was created by Thomas Park,  possibly as his various solo acts including Mystified, Mister Vapor, AutoCad and others. More information about his efforts can be found at his webpage ( Thomas Park Home Page ).

If Thomas is unavailable for information particularly regarding his works, please contact lwondell (at) hotmail (dot) com or rrooyycce (at) hotmail (dot) com. Serious inquiries only, please do not harass these folks. And please try contacting Thomas directly through his webpage first, if possible.

Thomas Park of Mystified created several drone samples using the sound of his harmonica. He offered the samples up for remixing, and a small group of artists volunteered their time into doing so. Four remixes are represented here, in different styles. All are excellent. Artists represented include Tomorrow's Man, SoundSavant, Phillip Adkins and Mystified.

Combining phonography and longform ambient genres seemed like a good idea, and I especially wanted to work from a piece I did with Stephen Philips, "Texture One" (2005, Webbed Hand Records). Namely, I wanted to use glurp sounds, or sounds created by water. All of the many sounds in this longform piece are 100 percent harvested and created at my apartment. One of the predominant sounds is actually a brewing device malfunctioning. I promise that none of the sounds involve my urinating--...

'JISEI (jisei no ku) means 'death poem' in traditonal Japanese culture. before dying a cultivated person used to write a short poem (often a haiku) revealing the most intimate feelings and thoughts at the moment. I tried to interprete some classical Japanese death poems (one by the famous haiku poet Basho, one from the famous painter Hokusai) in form of abstract ambient soundscapes - and to visualize them as generative abstract images. amongst the 12 tracks of 'Jisei' there also 2 'tamuke'...

the album is called "morse music" because every song contains its name in the form of morse code. morse as rhythm? i can use morse encodings as horizontal structure and thereby create a sound composition? my head says yes, my heart (beat) of the first compositions, no. many recurring arrhythmic accents seem to contradict the steady heartbeat. so are incurred sounded constructs that contain all of your name as a morse characters, but contacts are embedded in uniform - the heartbeat...

As for "Tertium Quid", composer C.P. McDill of Akashic Crow's Nest writes, ". . .it is a long-form piece of 'orchestrated generative' sound art. A little more complex than the previous two ACNs on Treetrunk in that it is composed from multiple generative outputs, assembled with a bass foundation, a recurring motif, and several distinct themes. . ." Treetrunk finds this piece to be eerie, spacey, connotative-- many things. We think you will love it!

Akashic Crow's Nest, a recording project of C.P. McDill, utilizes images as the source material for its distinct sound. First, very long pictures are created using Photoshop. Layers of home-created industrial atmospheric samples are puncutuated by deep, reverberent percussion and washes of static. Frantically spinning samples cycle in and out. The only rules in...

Ayato had the idea for a collaboration. He assembled 5 tracks of Middle-Eastern styled music and sent the raw files to mystified. Mystified mixed the sounds, and added a few of his own. The result has a strong Muslimgauze flavor, with a little drone thrown in. Enjoy! Volume #2 to come soon.

The excellent anonymous collective of Norweigian droners have created a new "Constant" piece-- the 28th one made. This version is deep and rumbling with bizarre harmonic washes. "Constant" pieces, for those unfamiliar, are musical works based on being as minimal as possible-- finding the least possible thing necessary for listening. These pieces tend to be drone in nature. The original Constant appeared on Webbed Hand Records , and others have been released at the TZP Drone...

"'SALT SEA ISLAND'- is a sound cartography collected through field recordings across the world.  these records are done during what guy debord describes as 'dérive' or 'psychogeography drifts': the experimental exploration of the environment, the mindful or transient passage through urban or country areas. This method can also be used to map the inner space - to create different thematic maps of reality. For these records I dislocated myself, followed animal trails deep into german...

Years before mystified began, Thomas Park created various kinds of electronica as AutoCad. AutoCad was a product of the MP3.com and IUMA era. Although much of this material had a late 1990's-early 2000's feel, Thomas was able to make some innovations during this period. As AutoCad, Thomas created a distinct form of fractal and mathematical techno, and explored various melodic and rhythmic loop structures. He felt that the material was notable enough to be restored and shared, and so here it is....

Here we have another excellent chapter in the "Constant" series. "Constant" pieces are works of minimal drone that tend to use a "less is more" approach. The idea of these songs is to create the least possible ambient drone material necessary for listening. Mystified created the first "Constant" on Webbed Hand Records ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ). Several artists gave the theme their own spin at the TZP Drone Company (...

There is a large body of solo work by Thomas Park, but also a collection of tracks that use his sounds in new creations. From techno dub to drone to noise/experimental, these pieces exemplify different genres. Here are 10 tracks by 10 artists, using sounds created by or chosen by (at least in part) Thomas Park. Can you sense similarities in these tracks? Differences? Does using sounds by one artist result in a consistency between tracks, or are they each alone a separate entity? Thomas (of...

In 2010 Mystified released the hit E.P., "Adventures Of Plunderman", both on his own Bandcamp page and on Webbed Hand Records. Hailed as a "plunderphonic wonder", "Adventures Of Plunderman" combined retro vinyl samples with state-of-the art electronic sounds and mixing. Now, in February of 2011, you can hear the entire E.P. once again from a new standpoint-- ultra-high-fidelity. The FLAC files in this release are cut from 24-bit WAV files straight from the studio,...

The Complex Silence series is indeed fortunate to once again host a release by Dave Seidel, aka mysterybear. What's in store for us with this fresh release are two tracks of Dave's signature drones, utterly beautiful in their mathematical perfection and grandeur. There's an added layer in these tracks as well, and we'll let mysterybear explain: "These pieces both employ the technique of binaural beating, and are thus most effective if you listen with headphones. Gyre II is made with...

Darrell Burgan has released another album under his Palancar project, this time a collection of three introspective ambient pieces representing 'moments' from his childhood that changed the direction of his life. The music is textural, somewhat dark, but quite approachable and suitable for either active or passive listening. Darrell is privileged to have his music released on Treetrunk, one of his favorite netlabels, and hopes that there will be more Palancar music on Treetrunk in the future....

JHACK consists of Al Conroy (Canada) and Jan Kees Helms (the Netherlands). The duo collaborate since the eighties by exchanging music recorded on tapes. Nowadays they compose music by exchanging sounds by internet. Darker Days is a trilogy of guitar drones and field-recordings made in two continents of the world and melted together in a melancholic atmosphere.

For listeners who enjoy the patient rewards of longform drones, Larry Johnson (known widely and affectionately in netlabel circles as LAJ) offers up a slowly evolving universe of subtle harmonies for Complex Silence 35. An opening deep-end thrum provides a gently rocking motion that eventually gives way to an extended stream of stretched out middle harmonies. These tones evoke the sense of a cosmic chorus presiding over some gloriously unfolding celestial event. To add further interest toward...

Mystified is glad to report that the artist M.Nomized has agreed to use some of his acoustic drones to craft his very own deep, expressive dark ambient/drone tracks. Both artists hope you will enjoy and appreciate these excellent works. M.Nomized is a recording artist, mail artist, author, collagist and painter who was born Madrange Michel in Paris in 1956. He started his work in 1975 with contemporary music and sound research. In the subsequent 39 years he has appeared on more than 200 solo,...

May 11, 2012 --I had been up all night listening to and working on music. Just before dawn a big storm was raging. Some storms have a way of energizing me rather than lulling. As you will hear, I left my H2 Zoom recorder running, jumped off the porch and drove off into the rain. The voices heard throughout are processed and derived from a field recording of an annoying conversation. Repeated over and over was the phrase: "you know what question I hate?" I'll let you guess what...

Even if you've only been paying slight attention to the world of netlabel ambient music, podcasts, radio, and artists the past few months, the name Jack Hertz has probably crossed your reading and listening paths. Jack approached me and Thomas in the early part of 2012 with an idea for the Complex Silence Series that we listened to and liked, but didn't feel fit the CS concept exactly right. I encouraged Jack to try again, thinking that I might hear back from him a few months later. Instead, I...

With "Constant 13", Stephen Philips of Dark Duck Records ( http://www.darkduck.net/ ) brings us an excellent longform drone. Deep bassy vibrations and tonal layers are offset by interesting percolations. Treetrunk Records is proud to host Mr. Philips. We hope you enjoy his "Constant" as we have.

Amazingly, with each release, the Complex Silence Series keeps evolving. The next step in the evolution is upon you now--a beautiful ambient rendition from one of the genre's newest Masters, Brin Coleman, who records as Bing Satellites. Brin writes of this piece: "This recording is an excerpt from a larger theoretical work. The music is performed on two instruments, each playing fourteen different notes on a continuous loop. The length of each loop differs slightly (from just under 1...

For "Constant 23", Phillip Wilkerson offers a quasi-organic sitar-sounding drone that seems to twist and grow (complete with pops and crackles), in a kind of psychedelic time-lapse haze. This long-form drone is further enhanced by nurturing, transcendent harmonies floating in a luscious and spacious ambience. Constant 23 is designed for endless loop play for hours of seamless enjoyment. Treetrunk Records really enjoys this version of Constant, and hopes you will, too....

"This music is a result of a collaboration project using Jack Hertz' live recording, of 4 FM8 synthesizers as a starting point. The concept was to use his music as a sample source to compose a piece of my music by adding to and manipulating his samples. The primary elements I used were field recordings of water streams, rain, and toilets flushing along with my own synthesizer music/sound motifs. I combined, processed and mixed theses elements in various ways , in order to arrive at the...

Fractal Diner represents a collaboration between several artists with the purpose to create a compilation of fractal and generative material. Different methods and programs were used to write the pieces on this album. Some pieces are remixes of material by another artist, and others are original works. Given the diversity of material, we at Treetrunk feel that this album is surprisingly coherent and is definitely great fun to listen to. From becalmed sinewaves to twinkling bells to unnamed and...
